Mock Elections
The League of Women Voters of Moscow sponsors a Mock Election every two years for the students of Latah County. The goal of the Mock Election is to familiarize the students with the process of voting, to encourage research into candidates and issues so that they will make responsible and informed choices when they vote, and to learn proper behavior at the polls. Students register to vote, use an age-appropriate ballot based on the Optical Scan ballot of the general election, mark their ballot in secrecy at voting booths, deposit their ballots in a ballot box, and even get an “I Voted” sticker. As much as is possible, their experience at Mock Election duplicates the experience of a general election.
This year’s Mock Election was held on October 25, 26, and 27. All districts in the county participated with all but the Moscow High and Paradise Creek Regional High schools voting at polls established in their schools. Moscow High and Paradise Creek RHS voted at polls set up at the 1912 Center. Over 100 volunteers helped put on the three day event. The League is grateful to all the volunteers from the League, the community, the Parent and Teacher organizations, and the students from the University of Idaho for their contributions of time and effort.
