Last year Rinpoche told us that he had had a dream for a long time. The dream was to try to simulate the education a Dharma student would receive in a monastery for his students in the West. He announced that he wanted all his centers to begin to offer a seven year course called "The Union of Sutra and Tantra."
This course will study the traditional Tibetan texts written by the greatest Buddhist masters. Each year will be a curriculum of study, and at the end of each year students will receive a certificate of completion, signed by Rinpoche and stating that this student has achieved an understanding of Buddhist philosophy and its integration into their daily life. This is something that Rinpoche stresses to all of us who are interested in taking all or just some of the course. The Union of Sutra and Tantra course will stress the application of Buddhadharma in our daily life.
The first year of study, the study of Lam Rim by Pabonka Rinpoche began for the Golden Blue Lotus Tara Meditation Center on October 4th. Rinpoche taught for four nights in Vancouver, BC last September giving an overview of the first year's study of Lam Rim. We began by watching together the first of our four videos of his September teaching. It was such a cozy and warm way to spend a Sunday afternoon! This promises to be a nice winter activity for our Sangha.
Each Sunday we will be listening to tapes of senior students in Vancouver
as they teach sections of Lam Rim by Pabonka. Then we will have a one hour
discussion about the points that were made. We are all very excited about
this opportunity to study a more in-depth program. Rinpoche said that this
course is important because it gives us the opportunity to learn Dharma
"step by step."
