In 1980 Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse (ATVP) was formally organized by a concerned group of community members to provide support and safety for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and non-offending family members and friends.  ATVP is a private, non-profit organization governed by a community-based Board of Directors.

Services are provided to Whitman and Latah county residents free of charge, confidentially and without discrimination.  Services include 24-hour telephone or in-person crisis intervention; emergency, confidential shelter; legal and medical advocacy; individual and group support; information and referral; and community education.  In 2005 ATVP celebrated its 25-year anniversary of providing services to residents of the Palouse.

VISION

To end domestic, sexual and individual violence and victimization in our communities.

MISSION

We affirm and support non-violence in our community.  We provide a safe, supportive environment where victims and survivors are provided opportunities for advocacy, safety, learning and self-determination.  We are dedicated to social change efforts through education and outreach that focus on the effects of crime, domestic and sexual violence in our communities.

ATVP is the sole 24-hour provider of emergency domestic violence and sexual assault victim services in the area.  Since its inception over 25 years ago, ATVP has grown from a grassroots organization providing volunteer-supported services, adding a few part-time staff, then with safe homes followed by a small shelter, to a community-based organization with paid professional staff and a 15-bed shelter (with capability to handle additional overflow in extreme situations).  ATVP is committed to an empowerment model, offering clients the opportunity to consider a wide range of options as the individual needs and circumstances dictate and a safe, supportive environment in which to reach decisions.
